How we work. How we work. Why three of our own intraday strategy families are held back from the marketplace.
Open almost any video about algorithmic trading in India and you will see the same demonstration. Two lines cross on a five-minute chart of a well-known share, a green arrow appears near the bottom of a move, a red arrow appears near the top, and the presenter adds up the points between them. Over a week of chosen charts the rule looks effortless.
Run that exact rule over two years of every five-minute bar across ten large NSE companies—charging brokerage, Securities Transaction Tax, exchange turnover fees, GST, stamp duty, and the one-tick nudge of a real order filling against the book—and the picture changes completely. A rule that broke even or made a modest profit on the chart becomes a steady, mechanical transfer of your account to the broker and the exchequer.
The arithmetic of a small intraday trade
In a large NSE stock, an ordinary five-minute intraday move that goes your way and exits on the opposite signal might capture three or four tenths of a percent on the share price. On an ₹8,000 position, that is twenty-five to thirty rupees of gross gain.
Now count the round-trip friction. Even on a discount broker with capped or low brokerage, statutory charges—STT on the sell leg, NSE transaction charges, SEBI turnover fees, stamp duty on the buy leg, and GST—plus one tick of slippage on entry and one on exit take a fixed slice out of every single trade, whether the trade won or lost. When a strategy trades four times a day across five stocks, it pays that toll a thousand times a year.
Indicators do not pay brokerage on a chart. On an exchange, every false turn pays the full toll.
What happened when we tested the popular intraday rules
We wrote three of the best-known retail intraday setups into AlgoScript—Supertrend with VWAP confirmation, the fifteen-minute Opening Range Breakout, and a long/short Supertrend follower—and ran each over our five-minute NSE dataset with realistic execution costs enabled.
All three found real moves. None of the three cleared our quality gate after costs. On the Supertrend and VWAP family, roughly half of the total drawdown came not from being wrong about direction, but from the charges accumulated across the choppy mornings that looked like trends at ten o'clock and reversed by eleven. On the Opening Range Breakout, a two-to-one reward-to-risk ratio that broke even before friction turned negative by almost exactly the sum of its charges.
What systematic desks do differently
- They demand a move large enough to dwarf the toll. That is why every one of our four daily share strategies passed the five-year test: when a winning trade holds for weeks or months and earns ten or fifteen percent, a fraction of a percent in round-trip charges is a rounding error.
- They filter out dull regimes before looking at an entry signal. Professional rules do not ask 'did the indicator flip?' first. They ask 'is the market in a state where flips follow through?' using trend-strength floors like ADX, volatility percentiles, or index-level regime switches.
- They test edges, not states. An amateur rule often checks whether an indicator is green and keeps firing orders on every bar. A systematic rule triggers only on the transition bar and enforces position and daily-loss caps in the execution engine.
How to test whether your own idea survives
We left our three intraday templates in the strategy builder on purpose. You can open any of them as a plain-English rule sheet, tighten the ADX trend filter, widen the stop outside ordinary bar noise, or restrict the entry window, and run the backtest with costs switched on. If a change in design makes the edge larger than the toll over at least twenty trades, the quality gate will show you.
If you take one thing away
A strategy only has an edge if the average trade is much larger than the round-trip cost of placing it. Before trusting any chart setup, run it over years of bars with brokerage and slippage switched on.
Every strategy family on AlgoVend can be opened as a plain-English Rule Sheet, edited without code, and tested with real brokerage.
